HOW TO DESIGN A GOOD WORKSPACE AT HOME?

Summer is over and it’s time to get back to the routine, although the routine is not the same as last year. This 2020 is being a year of uncertainty, of changes, of constantly adapting to new guidelines and now it is time to return from vacation. We do not know if we will be able to go to the office, if we will continue doing telework or, perhaps, a mixture Of the two!

Not to mention those of you who have little ones at home: Can they go back to school? Will they be able to go every day? Will it be like this throughout the year? Doubts, questions, uncertainties that lead us to have to adapt to each of the situations, and that has meant some people have had to find a space at home to work.

All those people who have already been made to stay at home during the 3 months of confinement know that it is not easy: the distractions of household chores, the temptation to go to the kitchen and snack, children playing around the house, with homework or demanding attention, are just some examples of the disadvantages of teleworking.

From MANUEL TORRES DESIGN we want to help you design the interior of your home with these 10 tips to create your workspace and make it as comfortable, relaxed and efficient as possible.

     1. GOOD LIGHTING IS ESSENTIAL

As ERGA FP, a higher school in occupational risk training, says: “Poor lighting can cause the appearance of visual fatigue, with the pertinent damages that this represents for people’s health: eye problems (dryness, itching or stinging) headache, tiredness, irritability, bad mood, etc. ”

So having good lighting in our workspace is essential.

For this we must take into account both natural light, try to choose a corner of the house near large windows or where a lot of sunlight enters; and artificial light, which is better to be diffused and focused on the workspace. This should be in a good position to avoid reflections on the screen and thus not strain your eyes.

      2. ORDER! THAT I AM WORKING

Keeping your workplace orderly is essential to avoid distractions, gain efficiency in your work and save time.

Depending on how your space is, you will need an intelligent organization to find a place for all the necessary material or to be able to do different activities in the same room.

For this you can help yourself with elements such as boxes, filing cabinets, decorative trays, etc. The shelves or drawers are ideal to organize according to their use and have everything at hand. And so you’re not searching like mad, spending a little of your time labeling each compartment will save you a lot of time down the road.

       3. GIVE NEW USES TO YOUR SPACES

Is your house small? Size doesn’t matter! Take advantage of the space to give it new uses. For example, in the living room, behind the sofa can be a good place to put a desk table (as you can see in the photograph of the interior of this house in Barcelona). In this way you can work as a family or, at least, have the children within easy reach.

But if what you need is to have a corner for everything, you can create two environments in the same room with the help of shelves or curtains that separate the room in two, or even with rugs to divide the different areas.

      4. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FURNITURE YOU ALREADY HAVE

Why add more furniture if the ones you have already serve you? Versatile furniture, such as the dining room table, are perfect for designing the interior of your workspace since they are usually of a considerable size and are in a well-lit area of the house. So prepare the room to transform it into your office during working hours and into the dining room to sit down with the family.

You can help yourself with cabinets and drawers to store and organize the elements according to the activity you are going to develop.

      5. CREATE MORE INTIMATE SPACES, ENHANCE CONCENTRATION

If you are the type of person who is easily distracted, creating a more intimate and minimalist environment can go a long way.

To do this, try not to have many things in sight, use opaque cabinets and drawers. Make sure you don’t paint the walls with a wide variety of colors or very garish colors. And place the table in a place where you know that you will not have distractions in front of you.

      6. COLORS AS A SOURCE OF CREATIVITY

In recent times, the influence that colors have on people has become evident. These interact in decision-making, in the storage of memories, in emotions and in our mental state in general.

To get a feeling of spaciousness and more light in your workspace, use palettes of raw or white colors. It is advisable to look for calm and cheerful tones that influence in a positive way. If you are going to use saturated colors make sure it is in small areas, to give a point of joy and life to your home.

In this way, white, blue and green are colors that convey calm, peace and confidence. And red, orange and yellow stimulate creativity.

It is also advisable to keep a chromatic harmony with the rest of the furniture and elements of your office, not only because of an interior design issue, but also because of how they affect our emotional state.

      7. DO NOT YOUR BODY COMPLAIN!

Ergonomics is always very important, but considering the hours we spend working, in this space it is essential!

So make sure you have a chair that is comfortable and that helps you maintain good body posture: that it supports your lumbar well, that you can stretch your legs or elevate them a bit (it would be ideal if you could have a footrest) and that legs and back are at a right angle. (We leave you an example of Vitra below)

As for the table, it is important that it is wide enough to be able to place the computer at a minimum distance of 40 cm and support the forearms. The computer should be at the level of your eyes, to avoid constantly turning the neck and trunk of your body

To adjust as much as possible to the ergonomic needs of our body, we can follow the guidelines that ergonomic studies give us, where we can see all the factors to take into account and adapt them to the room designed in our home.

      8. THE POWER OF AROMATHERAPY

Like colors, which we have talked about previously, smells also influence your mental activity and mood, so you can play with aromatherapy to create a healthy, productive and creative environment at home.

Citrus aromas are good for memory and good spirits; mint, for energy; rosemary and jasmine enhance positivism and reduce fatigue; and geranium stimulates creativity. You can find many different oils depending on the environment you want to generate.

      9. CLOSE TO NATURE

As you well know, in MANUEL TORRES DESIGN we are inspired by all our designs with biophilia, which explains the necessary union of the human being with nature, in an ancestral and evolutionary way. So we cannot miss that green touch in our workplace that also helps us clean and purify the air.

Living with fresh plants and flowers improves attention and concentration, causing you to become more productive. And plants such as cacti, ivy or dieffenbachia are very effective against radiation and electromagnetic waves.

      10. LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE YOUNG PEOPLE!

Surely they will not have bills to pay, or a boss pending their deliveries, but they will need their work corner for class assignments or their creative moments. What better example of responsibility and perseverance than creating their workspace for them, too?

Luckily, children’s furniture is usually much more versatile and lightweight so it is easy to assemble and disassemble. This can be combined either with walls of similar colors to unleash creativity, or with white walls to give a more spacious and orderly feeling.

The storage furniture is ideal to teach them to be organized and orderly, as well as to be able to have everything in the same room.
