Interior Design Trends 2024

At this time, we begin a new stage with renewed vigor. During the transitional days towards a new year, the world of interior design never rests nor stands still, as design studios and fairs are filled with new ideas. The creators of new trends (and those eager to learn about them) are keen to discover how social and cultural changes have shaped the interior design trends of 2024.

Ultimately, everything that happens in interior design, from the need to optimize spaces to the seasonal color palette, is a result of all the changes occurring around us and our progress as a society. How will design represent us in 2024? If you want to get your home ready for this new year, take note of all the trends we’re going to discuss!

A note before we begin

Although these are the key points that will mark the interior design trends of 2024, it doesn’t mean they must be followed strictly. Homes are like people – no two are alike; each space has its own characteristics and needs. It doesn’t make sense to try to fit in a trendy sofa if your dining or living room is tiny and it doesn’t complement the rest of the decor.

It’s good to stay ‘up-to-date’ with trends, but always remember to adapt them to your space and lifestyle. When new design trends emerge, they may initially appear a bit more elaborate or vibrant than usual. However, when they become accessible to the general public, their visual impact is often reduced as they strive to accommodate almost anyone with the new design.

The opposite can also happen: you might be willing to redesign the rest of your home or a specific space to align with an interior design trend of 2024, which undoubtedly encourages structural changes even in homes. If that’s the case, you might need the help of a professional team like Manuel Torres Design. Our priority is to always be at the forefront of design, innovation, new technologies, and home automation, which is why we are so excited about what 2024 holds for interior design.

Undoubtedly, AI and technological advances, also within our homes, combined with a focus on sustainability, have transformed the way we understand dwellings. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s dive directly into explaining what will mark the arrival of 2024 in terms of interior design.

Trends

There are many things to consider when the first trends of the year begin to emerge: how we live, our daily lives, how we coexist with other inhabitants of the dwelling… There is no longer a single model of family, and many people live together for years simply as roommates.

Interior design, in addition to being creative, must respond to these new needs for habitability. The shape of houses, at least indoors, must adapt to new customs. Hence, many trends follow this line. Let’s see them:

Craftsmanship

Although it’s a trend that has been around for years, its popularity seems not to wane. We seek unique, authentic pieces to decorate our spaces, especially those handmade. We no longer guide ourselves by what’s most perfect or what everyone has, but by what resonates with us and the value we know how to give to a handmade piece.

This trend goes hand in hand with the pursuit of sustainability, the reuse of materials and products. If it’s already made, it’s best to keep using it and repair it. Hence, what seems ‘poorly made’ or contains certain imperfections is no longer frowned upon. It also helps to value craftsmanship and the effort and dedication required for these pieces. We no longer seek mass and constant consumption but rather special pieces that last and bring us memories.

More Color

We finally abandon the trend towards minimalism in terms of color and neutral color palettes to let a bit more color into our lives. It’s possible that being surrounded by beiges and whites for so long has made us want to bring more color back into our interiors. We will see 2024 embrace this trend.

Without a doubt, we’re moving towards the use of color on walls, especially, but also on ceilings and floors. This doesn’t mean that rooms will now be saturated with color, but there will be livelier and more energetic touches here and there. Furniture will also be the perfect test subject for these new palettes, which are gaining ground, as well as art. Paintings will be a perfect excuse to add a powerful eye-catching factor that fills the space with life without overloading it.

Combining strong colors and finding the balance between them and the decorative elements is a major challenge that can bring very particular characteristics to the home and represent its inhabitants much better. In these cases, it’s better to rely on professional interior designers who can advise you on the best decisions at all times.

Biophilic Design

In relation to the sustainability theme we discussed earlier comes the so-called biophilic design. It seeks greater integration of nature into enclosed spaces or the interiors of homes. In 2023, we experienced the trend towards vegetation and decorating with plants (which doesn’t seem to disappear in these interior design trends of 2024).

However, these designs are not only about this: in addition to vegetation and natural materials, lighting inspired by nature’s colors, the shapes seen outside, and the search for spaces that give a sense of openness, of outdoors, are also involved. Once again, there is a trend of bringing the outside indoors.

And for this, there are hundreds of ideas, from creating a corner full of plants or making a mini garden to creating a green wall full of embedded vegetation. In addition to helping us decorate and welcome a part of ourselves that we usually disconnect from, the air quality in the room will be better.

Multifunctional furniture

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that our homes had many more possibilities than it seemed: suddenly the kitchen became an office and the living room a gym. The current lifestyle demands that spaces have more than one use, especially because small homes are more prevalent.

Hence, multi-purpose furniture has become fashionable and remains a trend in 2024. We’re talking about foldable tables, sofas with storage space, or versatile furniture. This trend combines practicality and reduction of elements, two fundamental characteristics for furniture in small homes. This way, we save space without sacrificing style or the demands we make of our place.

Home automation

This technological aspect of homes is one of the most powerful interior design trends of 2024 and is growing the most. The aim is to integrate home automation into furniture and even architectural elements so that they ‘blend in’ and become part of the home itself. At Manuel Torres, we realized the significance of this advancement, which is why we have a team of specialists with over 17 years of experience in solutions for home, office, hotel, and business control.

We develop smart spaces and homes with the most advanced and innovative solutions, offering countless possibilities thanks to state-of-the-art technology and according to the needs and budget of the user.

Wood paneling

Wall coverings, especially with wood, are going to make a strong comeback in 2024, but with a contemporary focus: not all walls will be covered, but it will be done as when painting a wall a different color. It will be strategically placed to highlight specific areas. This technique not only adds elegance and texture to the space but also creates an attractive visual contrast and is in line with the biophilic design we mentioned above. It could also be done with other materials, such as stone.

For example, in this apartment in Badalona where we worked, it was designed to respect the original materials of the structure and they were not covered to play with that texture contrast, which gives it a modern and casual look.

The Return of Neo-Classical

Yes, everything comes back. Now it’s the turn of Neo-Classical style, but not without seeking that timelessness in the elements we include. Who said that classic and contemporary couldn’t go well together? Here are some ideas: you can add columns and cornices in fundamentally modern spaces so that it’s almost impossible to tell which era it’s based on.
